Bio: I've done ISP support for over a decade (Trumpet Winsock, anyone?), and I've been doing computer repairs on my own for spare cash for half of that. I'm currently an IT administrator for a locally-owned and operated construction company. So between all three of those jobs, I have covered a wide range of support issues, all the way from administrating a mixed OS network to walking people through their ISP signup process because they're too frakkin' lazy or too frakkin' stupid to read the instructions. As part of my side business, I refurbish old P1 and P2 computers to donate or sell very inexpensively to families with children who would otherwise never be able to get a computer. I have turned one bedroom in our house into a fairly extensive workshop, and I spend quite a bit of my spare time there. If not, you would normally find my wife (Magenta) and I sitting on the couch, each with our own laptop, surfing the net while watching TV, with our dog and cat curled up at our feet. Very Norman Rockwell, but sponsored by Dell and Apple.

(esp to RiffRaff but in general as well) The problem not only _only_ occurs on XP, but apparently only for certain hardware. The failing application is the control panel for a particular RealTek sound card, and the conflict only seems to appear on WinXP - probably because user32.dll on Win2K and Win2K3 uses a different base address? -devzero

Hey Riff, Open Office and Office 2007 do play nicely together... More or less- you can open an Open Office doc without a problem in Office 2007, but it does have an annoying compatibility checker if you try to close or save the file. I run into it every time I need to open something I did in Open Office, but it's easy enough to disable the checker or just ignore it if you're feeling lazy (like me). :) -taieena

The Linux phone? That would be the Motorola V8 RAZR2. Not the V9 or V9m models, though. It uses a new Linux/Java-based OS. Haven't played with one, but the V9m is a nice phone. Downsides to the V8: no memory card slot (although it does have 2GB of internal memory), and no 3G support (EDGE only). Then, of course, it's a GSM phone, so if your with a CDMA carrier, it won't work. -missourimule
